Young Idea was formed in 1971 by several dedicated members of Hertford Dramatic and Operatic Society who realised that there were many young people wanting to join in with the activities of the society. Dorothy Clark and Jessie Hopkins were among the prime movers for the junior section. Both ladies have been heavily involved in HD&OS activities over the years and are still stalwart supporters.

The name "Young Idea" is thought to have originated from Cyril Heath, who wrote about the amateur dramatic scene for a Hertford newspaper - "The Mercury" - over many years.

Going from strength to strength, the popularity of Young Idea has never been in doubt. Workshops are held on Sunday mornings during term time for children from the age of 9 years. During the Workshops we cover many aspects of stagecraft, including improvisation, teamwork, mime, movement, voice projection and make up, also encouraging understanding of the technical side of productions. Showcases are performed to parents and friends at the end of the autumn term and the summer term. At the latter, Certificates of Attainment are presented to Year 11 students and the winner of the annual Jessie Hopkins Achievement Award is announced. Trips are organised for Young Idea during the year - we have been to a Young Vic production of Tintin, a tour of the BBC, a workshop at the Globe and another at Pineapple Studios. In January 2010 we travelled to Stratford on Avon for an exciting Arabian Experience workshop at the RSC and then to see Arabian Nights.
